Racing Pigeon Velocity Calculator

Calculate your racing pigeon's velocity from the official race distance and flying time. The main result is shown in yards per minute (YPM), the traditional velocity measure used in pigeon racing.

How to use the calculator

Enter the race distance in miles and yards, then enter the pigeon's flying time in hours, minutes and seconds. Select Calculate velocity to see the result in yards per minute, miles per hour, kilometres per hour and metres per minute.

The calculator also includes two extra tools. Use Race time to calculate the time needed to cover a known distance at a given YPM. Use Race distance to calculate the distance covered from a known YPM and flying time.

About the Boglin Marsh calculator

Boglin Marsh originally had an online velocity calculator in January 2001. This version keeps the same three core calculations while presenting them in an updated format intended specifically for modern racing pigeon use.

FAQs

Q: What does YPM mean in pigeon racing?

A YPM means yards per minute. It measures the average velocity of a pigeon over the race distance.

Q How is pigeon velocity calculated?

A The race distance is converted to total yards. That figure is divided by the total flying time in minutes. The result is the pigeon's average velocity in yards per minute.

Q How many yards are in a mile?

A One statute mile contains 1,760 yards.

Q Does the calculator store my race data?

A No. All calculations take place in your browser. The calculator does not submit or store the values you enter.
